🗣 What Is a Writing System?
🗣 「文字」ってなんだろう？
A writing system is a way to show spoken language using symbols like letters or characters.
「文字」とは、話し言葉を見える形にするための記号のことです。
English uses the alphabet, but other languages use very different systems!
英語はアルファベットを使いますが、世界には全く違う文字を使う言語もあります。
🇯🇵 Japanese — Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji
🇯🇵 日本語：ひらがな・カタカナ・漢字
Japanese uses three writing systems: Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.
日本語は、3つの文字を使います：ひらがな、カタカナ、漢字です。

Hiragana is for native Japanese words. (ありがとう = arigatou = thank you)

Katakana is for foreign words. (コンピューター = konpyuutaa = computer)

Kanji came from Chinese and shows meaning. (山 = mountain, 木 = tree)

🇨🇳 Chinese — Characters (Hanzi)

Chinese uses characters that each show a word or idea.
中国語は、一つひとつが言葉や意味を表す「漢字」を使います。
Example: 人 (person), 火 (fire), 水 (water)
例：人（ひと）、火（ひ）、水（みず）
There are thousands of characters, but don’t worry — you don’t need all of them!
何千もの漢字がありますが、全部覚えなくても使えます！
🇰🇷 Korean — Hangul
🇰🇷 韓国語：ハングル
Hangul was created to help everyone read and write easily.
ハングルは、誰でも簡単に読み書きできるように作られた文字です。
Letters are made from simple shapes like circles (ㅇ) and lines (ㅣ).
文字は丸（ㅇ）や線（ㅣ）などのシンプルな形でできています。
Example: 안녕하세요 (annyeonghaseyo = hello)
例：안녕하세요（こんにちは）
🇷🇺 Russian — Cyrillic Alphabet
🇷🇺 ロシア語：キリル文字
Russian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, which looks different from the Latin alphabet.
ロシア語は、キリル文字という英語と違うアルファベットを使います。
Example: В sounds like “V”, not “B”!
たとえば、「В」はBではなく「V」の音になります。
Many countries use Cyrillic, like Russia, Ukraine, and Serbia.
ロシア、ウクライナ、セルビアなど多くの国で使われています。
🇸🇦 Arabic — A Flowing Script from Right to Left
🇸🇦 アラビア語：右から左へ流れる美しい文字
Arabic is written from right to left, unlike English.
アラビア語は、英語とは逆の「右から左」に書く文字です。
It has 28 letters and uses a beautiful, flowing style.
全部で28文字あり、流れるような美しい形が特徴です。
Letters change shape depending on where they are in a word.
単語の中での位置によって、文字の形が変わります。
Example: السلام عليكم (as-salaamu alaykum = peace be upon you)
例：السلام عليكم（こんにちは／平和がありますように）
🇮🇳 Devanagari — The Script of Hindi and Sanskrit
🇮🇳 デーヴァナーガリー文字：ヒンディー語とサンスクリット語の文字
Devanagari is used in India for languages like Hindi, Sanskrit, and Marathi.
インドで使われている文字で、ヒンディー語・サンスクリット語・マラーティー語などに使われます。
It has a horizontal line on top of each word, like a hat!
単語の上に「帽子」のような横線がついているのが特徴です。
Letters are written left to right, and many look like art!
左から右に書き、芸術のように美しい文字がたくさんあります。
Example: नमस्ते (namaste = hello)
例：नमस्ते（こんにちは）
🇮🇱 Hebrew — Another Right-to-Left Script
🇮🇱 ヘブライ語：アラビア語と同じく右から左に書く文字
Hebrew is used mainly in Israel and is written right to left, just like Arabic.
ヘブライ語は主にイスラエルで使われていて、右から左に書きます。
It has 22 letters and no vowels are written in everyday text.
全部で22文字あり、日常の文章では母音を書かないことが多いです。
Example: שלום (shalom = peace or hello)
例：שלום（シャローム＝こんにちは／平和）
🇹🇭 Thai — A Unique Script with Curves and Loops
🇹🇭 タイ語：丸みとカーブが美しい文字
Thai is used in Thailand and has a very distinctive style with many loops and curves.
タイ語はタイで使われていて、丸みやループのある独特なスタイルの文字です。
It doesn’t use spaces between words, so reading it is a fun challenge!
単語の間にスペースがなく、読みにくいけど楽しいチャレンジです！
Example: สวัสดี (sawasdee = hello)
例：สวัสดี（こんにちは）
