What is a World Heritage Site?

日本語：
世界遺産（せかいいさん）は、世界中の人にとって大切な場所です。ユネスコ（UNESCO）という国際（こくさい）的な組織（そしき）が、「未来にのこすべき文化（ぶんか）や自然（しぜん）」として登録します。
世界遺産は、「文化遺産」「自然遺産」「複合遺産」にわけられます。

A World Heritage Site is a place that is important for all people in the world. UNESCO (a world organization) chooses places that are special for their culture, nature, or history.
There are three kinds: Cultural, Natural, and Mixed Heritage Sites.

日本語：
富士山（ふじさん）は、静岡県と山梨県にまたがる火山です。きれいな三角形の形で、日本のシンボルといわれています。
昔の人たちは、富士山を「神（かみ）がすむ山」として、絵や詩（し）にたくさん登場させました。今も多くの人が登山（とざん）や観光（かんこう）に訪れます。

英語：
Mount Fuji is a volcano located between Shizuoka and Yamanashi. It has a beautiful triangle shape and is a symbol of Japan.
In the past, people believed gods lived in the mountain. Many artists drew it, and many poems talked about it. Even today, people enjoy climbing it or visiting to see the view.

2. 厳島神社 – Itsukushima Shrine

日本語：

神社（じんじゃ）は1400年以上前に建てられました。干潮（かんちょう）のときには歩いて鳥居の近くまで行けます。日本の伝統建築（でんとうけんちく）の美しさが見られる場所です。

Itsukushima Shrine is in Miyajima, Hiroshima. It is famous for the big red torii gate that stands in the sea.
The shrine was built over 1,400 years ago. At low tide, people can walk near the torii gate. It’s a great place to see traditional Japanese architecture.

3. 姫路城 – Himeji Castle

戦（いくさ）のときに守るためのしかけがたくさんあり、日本の城づくりの技術（ぎじゅつ）を学べます。

Himeji Castle is in Hyogo. It is famous for its white walls and is also called the “White Heron Castle” because it looks like a white bird spreading its wings.

4. 屋久島 – Yakushima Island

日本語：
屋久島（やくしま）は、鹿児島県にある自然遺産です。とても古い森があり、「縄文杉（じょうもんすぎ）」という木は、2000年以上も生きているといわれています。
たくさん雨がふることで知られていて、1年のほとんどがしめっています。

英語：
Yakushima is a Natural World Heritage Site in Kagoshima. It has very old forests, and one famous tree, called Jomon Sugi, is over 2,000 years old.
Yakushima is very rainy and humid, and that makes the forest full of life.

🏠5. 白川郷 – Shirakawa-go

日本語：
白川郷（しらかわごう）は、岐阜県にある伝統的な村です。「合掌造り（がっしょうづくり）」という三角屋根の家で有名です。
雪がたくさん降る場所で、屋根の角度を急にして、雪が落ちやすくなっています。今も人が住んでいて、昔ながらの暮らしを見ることができます。

Shirakawa-go is a traditional village in Gifu. It is famous for houses with steep triangle roofs, called Gassho-zukuri.
It snows a lot there, so the roofs are made to let the snow fall off easily. People still live there, and you can see old ways of life.
